This afternoon I had the honour of attending the rededication of the Heyside World War One Memorial, a breathtaking bronze sculpture that now resides in Royton Library following its remarkable restoration. It was a privilege to accept this memorial on behalf of Oldham Council and to pledge our commitment to preserving its legacy. The memorial, originally housed in Heyside Congregational Church, carries a deeply moving inscription:
“To The Glory of God in Loving Memory of These Our Brothers Who to Save Us Resisted Even Unto Death”
It also bears the names of 23 brave men from Heyside who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War One.
The journey to restore and return this memorial to the people of Heyside and Royton has been extraordinary. After being lost for years, it was rediscovered in Worcestershire and thanks to the tireless efforts of the Royton Branch of the Royal British Legion, over £10,000 was raised to bring it home.
This memorial now stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made and the gratitude we owe. It will remain on display in Royton Library for future generations to reflect upon. Thank you to everyone who attended this event, including those with personal connections to the fallen and original parishioners of Heyside Congregational Church #LoveOldham #LestWeForget #WWIMemorial #RoytonAndHeyside
