It was an honour to speak at the Urgent Health UK Conference today, discussing The Inequality Challenge – How Neighbourhood Health Can Deliver More Equitable Services.
Poorly designed services, duplication and inaccessible pathways continue to worsen health inequality. Access isn’t just about opening hours. It’s about fit. People working multiple jobs, without transport, or facing language barriers are systematically disadvantaged.
Workforce inequalities also drive inequity. Understaffed services in areas of greatest need create burnout, reduce continuity of care and widen the outcome gap. Life expectancy, chronic disease and infant mortality remain dramatically different depending on postcode.
Neighbourhood health offers a solution. Locally rooted, multidisciplinary teams co-designing services with communities, sharing accountability and partnering with schools, faith groups and voluntary organisations can close these gaps.
“Equity isn’t a slogan, it’s a daily discipline.”
Every pathway, every interaction is a chance to close the gap or widen it. Our goal must be a system where care finds people when they need it – quickly, compassionately and equitably #UrgentHealthUK #HealthEquity #NeighbourhoodHealth #CommunityCare #SocialJustice #NHS
